You’re Standing Inside the Instrument: A Score for 19 Buildings
May 1 — Sept. 13, 2026 | Listen Hear Gallery | CAMi
CAMi is open Wednesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the weekends. We are closed on Monday and Tuesday.
More than 20 architects, designers, and other experts in the built environment suggested their favorite buildings in Indianapolis that we then paired with Indianapolis-based artists. The artists then played some aspect or aspects of the buildings as sort of instruments to create a part of a combined soundscape or a sort of song.
Eight of these audio creations will play at once in the Listen Hear gallery inside CAMi, a space typically dedicated to sound-based art exhibits. All 19 audio pieces will rotate at different times, creating a soundscape that varies throughout the run of the show.
The 19 buildings are: Newfields, the Athenaeum, the Indiana State Capitol Building, Friedens United Church of Christ, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Irwin Library at Butler University, the IU Indianapolis University Library, Indianapolis International Airport, Christian Theological Seminary, Garfield Park Conservatory, the Indianapolis Artsgarden, the Pyramids (College Park), the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, Madame Walker Theatre Center, Barton Tower Apartments, Crispus Attucks High School, Indianapolis City Market, Jungclaus Mill, and the new CAMi Main Building.
